30 Day Challenge – Yoga

I am 22 days into my daily yoga challenge and so far I have not missed a day! All of my practices have been selected from the YogaGlo website. I have not stepped foot in a yoga studio for a month! I have not felt as if it would be a good idea to go into a hot, moist studio to practice yoga and unfortunately the studio I belong to has no other viable choices for me. Even the Ashtunga classes I love are "lightly heated" which in the summer can mean it is upwards of 88 degrees in the room. I … [Read more...]

Got Stress? So What Are You Going to Do About It? Part 3

So - what exactly is "stress"? Glad you asked. Stress is the natural reaction of the body to any demand placed upon it. These demands can be either physical (like running from a dangerous situation) or psychological (deadlines, worry, embarrassment, etc). At some point in the history of man the pendulum shifted from major stressors being those that were physical (running from a saber tooth tiger) to psychological (dealing with the demands of a promotion at work). Stress can be caused by … [Read more...]

Got Stress? So What Are You Going to Do About It? Part 2

If you are like me, stress manifests itself in physical ways. Even if I don't cognitively realize I am stressed out, my body knows.  My shoulders draw up and the muscles in my upper back and neck contract.  Next comes the headache.  I am prone to migraines.  Stress may not trigger a migraine, but it certainly can add fuel to the fire. Pain certainly doesn't help anyone's stress level. I find therapeutic massage to be very helpful in managing and reducing the physical manifestations of stress. I … [Read more...]

We all have a choice of how to deal with our stress. We can choose to deal with it in unhealthy ways such as overeating, substance abuse, and/or social isolation/withdrawal; however, these things will not … [Read more...]

I know when the witching hour is, now when is the blogging hour again?

I have a full life. By full, I mean busy.  I work full-time and my job is almost always stressful these days. I am in a position that carries a great deal of responsibility. I often have to make decisions that not the easy thing or the popular thing.  I could find another job in my field that was more fun,  but I feel that what I am doing now is important and makes a difference so I will keep doing it. A typical week day for me involves getting up before the sun comes up, working until the … [Read more...]

Untethered but not Unhinged

I never realize how stressful my job is and how tethered I am to it until I am on vacation. I am on call hours a day, 7 days a week. I am ultimately responsible for 121 individuals with intellectual disabilities. As a Program Director I have to carry a cell phone and be reachable basically at all times. I am tethered to my work and I take it seriously - maybe overly seriously at times. My job is of my choosing and I generally enjoy what I do. I feel it is good and honest work, but it is also … [Read more...]
