Music To Motivate

My favorite way to get and stay fit is walking. No special equipment is needed except a good pair of shoes, and for me, my iPhone. When I walk for fitness, I commonly walk for more than an hour at a time. While I enjoy walking with friends (including the man and the dog), I sometimes have to walk alone. My alone walks are often my high mileage walks. I don’t find many people willing to walk 10 or 15 miles with me.

When I walk long distances alone, I need something to motivate and distract me. Walking for several hours at a time can be a bit tedious without some sort of distraction. Sometimes audio books or podcasts will do, but when I really want to get moving, I need good music to push me along.

My taste in music is pretty eclectic. The important thing for me is that the music matches my mood (it’s an iso principal thing) and that my playlist is upbeat. The tempo needs to be brisk, but some variation in tempo is okay with me if it suits my mood.

Recently I did a 14 mile training walk. I updated a playlist I created for a half marathon a couple of years ago and put it on shuffle. I skipped over a few selections that came up because they just wont working for me, but for the most part the playlist kept me moving at a 15 minute mile pace and kept a smile on my face.

I am lucky enough to live in a place that provides me with a beautiful walking route. I can step out my front door and walk down to the beach in less than 30 minutes. I always see interesting and beautiful things on my walk. I use my iPhone to take pictures of what I see along the way and to stay in touch through Instagram, Facebook and twitter. I use music to keep me going.

Walking helps keep me fit and balanced.  Music and having a great place to walk makes it easier.
