Let’s Get Physical – Change Starts Today!

Today I started the “Let’s Get Physical” weight loss challenge. I will be participating along with about 40 other women – most of whom I have never met. Over the next 8 weeks we will become a community striving to meet a common goal – to get fit and lose some weight in the process.

During the challenge I will strive to reset my “lifestyle” and work toward being more healthy and fit. I hope to lose 15  pounds and to do so in a way that will enable me to keep it off. I am not looking at this as going on a diet, but I plan to change my diet.

I am going to implement Bob Harper’s Skinny Rule’s in conjunction with following the Weight Watcher’s plan which I have had success with several times in the past.  I am going to step up my activity level and try a few new things – starting with lap swimming.

I have put off getting back in shape longer than I should have. I let my fitness routine slip first when I developed tendonitis in my left knee (that I refused to deal with for a year) and then used thyroid surgery as an excuse to put off getting my fitness level back to an acceptable level.

I was my thinnest and probably fittest about 5 years ago.  I was constantly training for marathons and completed 9.  Training for marathons is VERY time-consuming.  I will complete another marathon, I want to do at least 10, but maybe not now.  Right now I need to get back on track so I can start from the best physical place possible when I do decide to go for that 10th medal.

For now I am going to strive to find my balance. I want to be fit, but I also want to have a rich and diverse life.  I am going to try to avoid assigning a size to my goal, but I wouldn’t mind fitting into  clothes better.  I don’t want to fit into the size I did 5 years ago – that was not sustainable for the long-term and I want something that I can sustain forever.  Fit and strong is what I am going for now.

Today was the first day of the challenge and I consider the day  a success.  I followed the meal plan I set up for myself, I walked at lunch and practiced Ashtanga yoga after work.  I cut down on caffeine (but did not eliminate it – that would have made me hateful) and drank an adequate amount of water.  One day at a time is how I plan to approach this.

I will strive to post about my progress each Tuesday and hope that you will comment with tips, opinions and recommendations if you have the for me.  You can also scold me if necessary.

By the way – I am not in any way affiliated with Bob Harper or Weight Watchers, but I love them both!
