In My Neighborhood

I‘ve decided that 2014 is going to be a year of positive change and discovery. So far, in the realm of change, we had new front doors installed and the exterior of our house painted. We went with a totally different look for both the door and the house - quite bold for us. A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I (along with our pup Ann Marie) stopped in San Juan Capistrano at Starbucks to get a cup of coffee. Originally we were on the way to the Dana Point Harbor for our usual … [Read more...]

Avon Walk for Breast Cancer – Charlotte (Part 3 – The Walk)

The first day of the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer - Charlotte, 2013 started with the alarm going off at 0'dark thirty. We popped out of bed, got dressed, grabbed some coffee and headed downstairs to walk over to opening ceremonies.  Jessica ran into a walker (Connie) who was doing the walk alone and she became an honorary member of our team.  Connie walked with us on and off for the next two days. We arrived at opening ceremonies (in front of the Nascar Hall of Fame) in plenty of time and … [Read more...]

Avon Walk for Breast Cancer – Charlotte (Part 2 – Event Eve)

The Golden State Girls  did not arrive in Charlotte until much later than planned and didn't get to bed until early Friday morning.  As a result, we got a bit of a late start on Friday.  We decided that the first order of business was to find something to eat. By the time we got going it was nearly lunch time and after consulting our trusty iPhones, we decided to try to find a place called The Common Market.  Best decision ever! The Common Market  had yummy food and drink offerings like … [Read more...]

Avon Walk For Breast Cancer – Charlotte (Part One – Getting There)

Last month I participated in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was my first trip to North Carolina and my third time walking an AWBC event. I was lucky enough to have made the trip with two great friends - Jessica and Kristina. Jessica and I started our relationship with the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer over 10 years ago when we walked the last of the 3 day Avon events.  In 2010 Kristina, Jessica, Danielle (Jessica's sister)and I walk the Avon Walk in San … [Read more...]

Summer – What Summer?

It is times like this that I wish I had summer off.  Work has been crazy busy, and not in a good way, since May and summer has come and nearly gone without me having time to notice it.  I was starting to feel disgruntled about this so I thought I better sit down and think about the things that I was able to do this summer instead of thing things I was not. I attended BlogHer13 in Chicago in late July with some amazing friends.  It was a whirlwind of a trip, but I met lots of nice people and … [Read more...]

Donating and Volunteering – Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

I am a big advocate of volunteering, donating and generally giving back to the global community in whatever way I can. Anytime I can pair up something I already do, like shop, with something that provides for someone in need, I try to.  Can't get much easier than that. Sometimes it feels a little self serving, like the other day when I got an additional percentage off my purchase at Macy's for donating $9 which would buy books for kids in need. The amount I got off my purchase was way more than … [Read more...]

Belgium and The Netherlands – Accidental Pleasure

A little over two years ago my husband and I went to The Netherlands and Belgium. I always say we went there by accident which is the best way I can describe how we happened to end up there.  It was one of the most amazing trips we have ever taken. It was our first time ever to Europe. We had a bunch of frequent flyer miles and we knew the dates during which we could take a vacation. My husband did the research and the choices for destinations for the time period we had available were … [Read more...]

Vacation Realizations

We have been on Kauai for almost two weeks now. We leave to head home tomorrow night. As I sit here taking in the nighttime sounds and the atmosphere of the evening on this beautiful island I am thinking of the things I have learned during my break from everyday life. 1. The world continues to turn even when I don't wear watch. 2. It is okay not to do my make-up and hair everyday - nobody seems to care. 3. Vacation, or perhaps Kauai, cures migraines. 4. Bugs love me, the feeling is not … [Read more...]

Accidentally Meatless on Kauai

Today starts the second week of vacation for me. We have been on Kauai since last Tuesday and aside from a bit of a head cold, it has been fabulous. I have given up wearing a watch and have mostly not been doing my hair or make-up. These may sound like minor things, but for me they are kind of big things. I have been relaxing and having a lot of fun. I have been trying to find a balance between my need to see and do everything with my equally important need to relax and de-stress. So far I … [Read more...]
