Join Me in Choosing Positivity and Happiness

This year I made a promise to myself to focus on being positive and happy; to strive to see the good things in every day and every situation; to surround myself with positive people and things; to expand my horizons. Over the past couple of years I feel like I was becoming more and more negative and, along with that, less happy and upbeat.  I theorize this change in mental outlook was leading to things like high blood pressure, dental issues (I broke several crowns - I am a legend at my … [Read more...]

Pasta with Pumpkin, Pine Nuts and Canadian Bacon

I may have mentioned once or twice that I love pumpkins.  I love the way they look and I love the way the taste.  I got some pumpkins for my porch to welcome fall. I also used some pumpkin in my cooking for the week.  A new recipe I found and adapted  was our Sunday dinner.  I found the original recipe on Cozi which I have been using to get organized.  I changed the recipe and made it my own.  Give it a try, you might like it too! Pasta with Pumpkin, Canadian Bacon and Pine … [Read more...]

Abstinence, Fasting and Sacrafice – oh my!

Have you ever wondered why McDonald’s starts randomly advertising fish sandwiches around late winter or early spring?  Have you ever wanted a handy, dandy guide to Lent or wondered why Easter falls on a different day every year?  Wonder no more! Easter must always occur on a Sunday, because Sunday was the day of Christ's Resurrection. It coincides with the paschal full moon, because that was the date of Passover in the Jewish calendar.  The Last Supper (Holy Thursday) occurred on the Passover … [Read more...]

30 Day Challenge – Move More!

I took a break from doing 30 day challenges during the holidays. I probably should have taken the break a month or two before I did - my last two challenges were a bit half hearted. I took January to reset - It’s a new year and I have new resolve. It’s time to get back to 30 day challenges. For me 30 day challenges are, in large part, about trying new things and forming new habits.  This month’s challenge isn’t so much about trying something new, but getting back to something and maybe … [Read more...]

Avon Walk for Breast Cancer – Charlotte (Part 2 – Event Eve)

The Golden State Girls  did not arrive in Charlotte until much later than planned and didn't get to bed until early Friday morning.  As a result, we got a bit of a late start on Friday.  We decided that the first order of business was to find something to eat. By the time we got going it was nearly lunch time and after consulting our trusty iPhones, we decided to try to find a place called The Common Market.  Best decision ever! The Common Market  had yummy food and drink offerings like … [Read more...]

Summer is NOW Officially Over

Since Labor Day people have been saying "Summer is officially over". This is not accurate. While labor day marks the unofficial end of Summer, it is not the official end of Summer. The start of Autumn or "Fall" as it is commonly referred to in the United States and Canada, is  when summer is officially over. The season officially begins at 4:44 p.m. eastern daylight time during the autumnal equinox, which is today. The autumnal equinox is when the sun crosses directly over the Earth's … [Read more...]

30 Day Challenge – 30 Notes in 30 Days

Last months 30 day challenge was random acts of kindness.  I am not sure if it was a success or a failure.  I am sure that I over thought it.  I was more cognizant of the way I responded to people and situations, but  the random part left me weighing the responses.  I kept  wondering if what I had done was a random act of kindness or if it was just something that I would normally have done (I hope that I am a kind person all of the time, not just randomly).  If it was something I normally would … [Read more...]

Keurig® Brew Over Ice – yes please!

I have had a Keurig® coffee maker in my office for the past several years. It is a workhorse and I love it.  So do the frequent visitors to my office. I believe wholeheartedly that some of those visitors come just for the coffee (you know who you are - I am on to you). At Blogher13 I was immediately drawn to the booth in the expo hall with all of the Keurig® machines. It was mid-morning and I figured another cup of coffee couldn't hurt. I was very excited when I realized they were … [Read more...]

In My Own Backyard

It always amazes me all the stuff that goes on in my own community that somehow I don't know anything about until the very last minute.  Perhaps it is because I am not that good about reading the local newspaper.  This weekend was a good example. Lobster Fest, Highland Games and The Elephant Parade all happening this weekend.  Any of these things sounded like a lot of fun, but it was the Elephant Parade that I was interested in. I heard about the elephnt parade some time ago, but the extent … [Read more...]

30 Day Challenge

Yesterday was the last day of my 30 day yoga challenge. July has 31 days and I hoped to do yoga at least 30 of those days. I was able to do yoga 29 days and I think that is pretty good considering all that was going on in July. I enjoyed my daily yoga very much. 28 of the 29 practices were done at home with the help of yogaglo.com. One was done in Millennium Park in Chicago as part of an event sponsored by Yazzo and Equinox fitness. It was a damp morning and the mats were wet, but I enjoyed … [Read more...]
