30 Day Challenge: Be Active – Day 30

On June 1, 2013 I made a personal challenge to be purposefully active for at least 15 minutes for the next 30 days.  Honestly, I thought I was setting the bar fairly low, I even felt a little guilty about setting such a low standard for myself.  What I found was the goal was not that low after all and on same days it was a challenge to achieve.  It is now June 30 and I am proud to say, I was able to be purposefully active for at least 15 minutes every day during the last 30 days!

June turned out to be a very busy month for me at work.  I worked 10-15 hour days on a fairly regular basis throughout the month and my weekends were not uninterrupted by work related calls and disturbances that took a lot of my time.  I am in a position that requires that I am on all 24 hours  day, 7 days a week.  Some weeks and months are relatively quiet, June was not one of those months.  This made the challenge much more difficult than I anticipated.

The very good thing that I found was that no matter how tired I was, how distracted I was, how busy I was, how irritated I was – I always made myself get at least that 15 minutes in because I had set that goal as a personal challenge. I am a person who is very motivated by a  challenge, even if I am the only one expecting that I meet the goal of the challenge.  On several instances, this challenge necessitated me dragging my dog and husband out the door after 9:00 or 10:00 PM for a walk up and down the street.  I felt obligated by my commitment, so I made sure it got done.  Ultimately I was always glad that I had done it – I felt better after.  Nearly all of my activities during related to the challenge were outdoors.  The combination of being outdoors, after many hours at work indoors,  and the act of moving helped to calm my mind and decrease my stress level.  This was true even when I only could squeeze in the minimum 15 minutes.

I had hoped that the added activity would result in a weight loss, but that did not happen, and I am okay with that for now.  More work to be done in that area, but I feel good that I am now in the habit of moving more.  The challenge also made me realize that  it was time to add in some cross training so I will be doing that once a week until I feel a little stronger (and more coordinated) and then will try to add in at least one more day a week of cross training.  My primary activity during the Be Active 30 Day Challenge was walking.  I will continue walking as much as I can because I am training to walk the Avon Walk For Breast Cancer in Charlotte in October.

I am going to continue to try to be purposefully active for at least 15 minutes every day.  This challenge left we with no doubt about how important it is to take a few moments every single day to move and breathe.  My next 30 day challenge starts tomorrow.  I have been bouncing a couple of ideas around.  I will make my decision tonight and will share what that is tomorrow.
